Performance Coach Course (Level 4)

Rugby Australia's Performance Coaching Course (Level 4) is designed to provide identified coaches operating within the Rugby AU Performance Pathway with education, training and development specific to context in which they coach.

The Rugby AU Coaching Framework outlines the competitions and programs that Rugby Australia are targeting through the Performance Coaching Course. These include:

  • Super Rugby
  • Super W
  • Pacific Nations Cup
  • National Rugby Championship
  • Premiership Rugby
  • Australian and State Under 20s
  • Australian Schoolboys
  • Junior Gold Cup

The 2018 Performance Coach Course is currently in review. No course will be held this season. 

Course Structure:

The program consists of two live-in camps, eight assessment tasks and ongoing personal development requirements.

Course Content:
The course content is aimed at the holistic development of all coaches in attendance and consequentially is comprised of both rugby specific modules and coaching practice modules. Delivery will be varied and topics that will be covered can be seen in the table below:

Course Delivery:
Modules will be delivered by content experts comprising of professional coaching staff from Rugby AU High Performance Units, professional coaches from other sports, expert technicians from leading sport institutions including the Australian Institute of Sport and leading academic experts from Australia’s top Universities.

Assessment Tasks:
Successful completion of the Performance Coaching course will require participants to attend both live in camp and receive a pass mark on all assessment item tasks. These tasks include:

    • Law Exam
  • Context Analysis & Annual Training Plan
  • University of Queensland – Learning Module #1: Talent Identification and Selection
  • University of Queensland – Learning Module #2: Long Term Player Development
  • Self-Assessment, Reflection and Action Plan
  • Cross-Sport Leadership Review
  • International Match Analysis
  • Written Assignment (2,000 words)

Course Fees:
A course levy of A$1995.00 (GST incl.) per participant either from successful applicants or their club/school is required. Rugby AU covers all costs of the course including flight transfers, accommodation, meals, facility hire fees, consultant and presenter fees, assessment and all course materials.

Nomination Details:
Coaches wishing to attend the course must meet the following criteria:

  • Currently SmartRugby compliant
  • Possession of a current Rugby AU Level 3 Coaching Accreditation or Rugby AU approved RPL equivalency
  • Recent completion of professional coach development (e.g. attended an Advance Coach Seminar, relevant tertiary education, formalised mentoring program)
  • Currently coaching in the Rugby AU Emerging Player, Performance or High Performance programs or competitions.
  • Potential to coach at the elite level, with an intent to keep coaching domestically for the next four year period.
  • Willingness to commit to continual professional development beyond completion of this course.
  • Preparedness to assist in Rugby AU and Member Union Player Development Programs.
  • Commitment to fulfilling a coach mentor role for future Performance coaches

 

To nominate coaches are required to complete a nomination form, compile a coaching curriculum vitae and submit these documents to their identified Member Union Coaching Development Manager. As there is no intake for 2018, nominations forms have been withheld from distribution.

International Coach Nominations:

Rugby Australia are providing a unique opportunity for a select number of internationally based coaches to attend the Performance Coach Course. There are a limited number of spots available, and each nomination will be judged on its merits. International Coaches must contact the High Performance Head of Coaching for more information. 

  • The course and all assessment will be in English
  • Attendees will be required to plan and pay for their own travel to both live-in camps
  • The course is more expensive for international coaches due to the access to Australian IP and coaching staff
  • A modified assessment program will be implemented for any ESL coaches
