Over the weekend the HSBC Sevens World Series made its way to Sydney for the third and second leg of the Men’s and Women’s event respectively. NMOT member’s Damon Murphy and Jordan Way represented Rugby AU as part of the World Rugby Referees team, but it was our Talent Identified Community referees who covered all 80 games over 3 days, with the group made up of seventeen AR/In-goals, five sub controllers and two water runners.
Overseeing the performances of the Rugby Au Team was Referees Manager Scott Young, Head Referee Coach Mitch Chapman, Women’s Coordinator Lauren Kelly as well as Talent ID coordinator Michael Tanzer.
“There were six debutants at this tournament, and it was a great opportunity for not only them, but the rest of the team to see what it takes to make it at this Level” Young said.
“There is a great team culture amongst the World Rugby 7’s referees, and for our team to be apart of that for a weekend was invaluable”, he added
“This was probably the most diverse group we have selected for an International Tournament. It is pleasing to see over half of our group coming from outside our ‘normal’ traditional strongholds of Sydney and Brisbane. It’s a credit to the work their associations have put in and the Talent ID process currently in place”.
