Over the weekend some of the best men’s and women’s players in the World descended upon Brisbane to compete in the Brisbane Global 10s.
While it is seen as vital preparation for the teams to test out their combinations with plenty of jerseys up for grabs leading into Super Rugby next week it was an amazing opportunity for a handful of QRRA and three of our National, up and going female referees to experience what it’s like within the professional environment.
“Community referees are the backbone of our rugby competitions. They give up their whole weekend refereeing or running touch at local rugby fields in front or 100 or so people all because they love the game and being involved.
To give them the opportunity to experience what it is like in front of a larger crowd at Suncorp Stadium, along side the likes of Carlos Spencer and Ben Mowen, as well as working with some of the best referees is invaluable and a way to show our gratitude for what they do week in week out.” Rugby Australia Referees Manager, Scott Young said.
It is clear to see that they got a lot out of the experience with accounts from Lara West and William Pugsley below.
“Refereeing at the Brisbane 10s was an amazing experience. Having the chance to watch and work withsome of the international referees was a great learning opportunity as we were able to ask questions and pick a few thing things up that we could potentially add into out own game. With the four team tournament for the women, it was another step up for the women's match official team. For us, this meant added intensity, the use of TMO and being out in the middle of an incredible crowd and atmosphere. It was exciting to be involved at this professional level of rugby and a highly enjoyable tournament.”
“The Brisbane 10's is full of excitement and motivation for all players and Match Officials. Being part of this competition I had the privilege of being surrounded by some of Australia's top high performance referees and even from Japan, Fiji and New Zealand! We also had an outstanding team of AR's/in-goal/No. 4 and 5 officials which performed to high standards over the two days. I was very fortunate to "in-goal" the Womens Final between good old QLD V NSW, what a cracking game it was refereed by Lara West. The mens final came down to the last minute for the all mighty Blues to snatch the win 10-7 over the Hurricanes. The game was refereed by Nick Briant and what a performance he showed in this final
