Rugby Australia has arranged the Rugby AU Sports Injury and Liability Insurance Plan on behalf of our Member Unions, their Affiliate Unions, Clubs and Referee Associations. All participants (Players, Coaches, Officials) must be registered with the Rugby Australia in order to obtain coverage under the plan.
All Clubs affiliated with Rugby Australia and/or the various Member Unions are automatically covered under the plan annually. Participation in the plan is compulsory for all Clubs competing in competitions managed by Rugby Australia and/or Member Unions, and a National Participant Insurance Levy is payable by participants upon registration.
Whilst the plan provides basic levels of cover for players and others participating in Rugby, it is not all encompassing (this is necessary to keep the cost of insurance affordable for players) and does not seek to replace the need for private health and other insurances.
Rugby Australia encourages all players and officials to take out their own private health insurance, life insurance and ‘Top Up’ coverage over and above the coverage provided under this plan. Gow-Gates can assist in regard to ‘Top Up’ insurance and other insurance requirements.

Rugby Australia is encouraged by the growth of different formats and configurations of Rugby Union events, tournaments, and matches. Event sanctioning and special event insurance can be obtained for Rugby Union events, tournaments, and matches conducted outside regular approved Competitions and/or representative matches/programs. These may include Sevens Rugby, 10s, short tournaments, carnivals and other game variants.
Additionally, groups of persons (referred to as ‘Entity Teams’) who wish to play and train but not necessarily form, or be part of, a Club, regular Competition or Sanctioned Event, may obtain insurance provided that they meet certain requirements.
A Summary of Cover is also available for Sanctioned Events & National Programs and Events.
Event & Entity Teams sanctioning guidelines, application forms and costs are available at our Sanctioned Events & Entity Teams page.
